How do I apply for housing assistance?

Applications for housing assistance are given on the following designated days every month, unless otherwise advertised in the local newspaper.

Applications for Public Housing are given on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 3401 Diamond Blvd. Weslaco, TX 78596 (picture ID and Social Security are required)

Applications for Section 8 are given on the 3rd Thursday of the month at Weslaco Housing Authority office located at 600 N. Airport Dr. Weslaco, TX 78596 (picture ID and Social Security are required).

 

How do I report changes?

All changes are required to be made in person by coming in to the Weslaco Housing Authority office and filling out the necessary forms to process the reported change(s).

Can I move and when can I move?

Once a contract is signed it is valid for one (1) year, after that year during the re-examination period if you wish to move it is advised that you inform your case worker, further instructions will be given to assist you in your request.

Can I add someone to my contract?

Yes, you can add another person to your contract. When adding someone to your contract and they are employed their income will be counted and considered to determine new rent amount and or continued eligibility.

Can I transfer to a different housing?

Yes, you can transfer to a different housing, depending on when and if the other housing is accepting port ins.

Can I move from Section 8 to Public Housing or from Public Housing to Section 8?

Yes, you can move one program to another, but to do so you will need to apply for the other program and you will be placed on the waiting list for the desired program. When the assistance becomes available and you are next on the waiting list you will be called and the process will begin.

Do I get credit for child care?

Yes, you can get credit for child care. We will require proof from the daycare in order to apply the credit to your case.

After my baby is born, how much time to I have to add him to my contract?

Once you receive the copy of your baby’s social security card and the birth certificate you come in to the office to add the baby to your contract.

How long can I have a visitor stay with me?

You can have a visitor stay with you for 30 days within a year.

If I miss my appointment can I reschedule?

Yes, if you miss an appointment you can call the office and reschedule your appointment within 24 hours of your missed appointment.

If my son or daughters start working do I have to report it?

Yes, if your son or daughter begins working it is your responsibility to report the income to our office.

f I get out of the program can I reapply?

Yes, if you leave the program in the proper manner by giving the 30 day notice and not owing any rent to the landlord or our office you can reapply.

What do I need to qualify for housing?

To qualify for housing you need to have a source of income, a clean criminal record, social security, id, birth certificate, and/or resident alien card (passport).

Do you have emergency housing?

No, we do NOT offer emergency housing.

What do I do if I have a complaint?

If you have a complaint and you are a Section 8 resident you need to contact your landlord to file a complaint. If your complaint is about your landlord you need to submit a written complaint to our office.

If you are a Public Housing resident and have a complaint, you need to submit a written complaint to our office.

What do I do if I am leaving the program?

If you choose to leave the program and terminate your assistance, it is required that you provide your landlord and our office a written statement giving your 30 day notice.

How do I report damages for repairs?

If you are a Section 8 resident and need to report damages for repairs you need to contact your landlord and request the repairs. If landlord fails to make repairs you may report it to our office in a written statement.

If you are a Public Housing resident and have a complaint, you need to contact your case worker to submit a request for a work order.

 

Can I reschedule my inspection?

It is not preferred that you reschedule an inspection, however, if you need to request to reschedule you can call or come by our office and arrangements can be made.

Do I have to remove my child from my contract when they turn 18?

No, however, once your child turns 18, their income will be considered to determine change in rent or continued eligibility.

What happens if I fail my inspection?

If you fail your inspection due to repairs needed by the landlord, we give the landlord time to make the repairs and then schedule a follow up inspection to make sure all repairs were done.

If my husband and I get back together do I need to add him to my contract again?

If you get back together with your spouse, it is your responsibility to report the change and add your spouse to your contract again. The returning spouse will be required to pass a criminal background check again.

What happens if my husband and I get separated?

If you and your spouse get separated, the person that holds the voucher (the person the voucher was issued to) need to come in to our office and report the change and remove the spouse from the contract.

The person that holds the voucher can if he/she chooses to, turn the voucher over to the spouse.

 

What happens if I cannot pay my rent?

If you cannot pay your rent, you need to make arrangements with your landlord. If no agreement is reached your contract can and will be terminated.
